It feels like it took me forever to put this pattern out, but it's finally here. This is the beanie pattern, the bucket hat will be in a separate post.
I know you want me to get straight into it, but can we talk about yarn selection first?
I have never put out a pattern where I say use 'X' specific yarn. Most of my patterns are stash buster types, but for this one I really only recommend using 24/7 Cotton by Lion Brand in Size 4. Substitute at your own risk. This worsted weight yarn is thin for a size 4. The recommended hook size is a 4mm and that is what we are going to use. So, meeting gauge might not be enough if the stitches are crammed tight together.
Another factor to think about with yarn selection (that I have honestly never considered until now) is WPI. What is WPI you ask? It's 'wraps per inch' and I actually bought a special tool to measure the WPI of my yarn selection so I could see for myself the vast differences between thicknesses of all my many worsted weight yarns I have in the craft room. The differences were pretty shocking. The 24/7 Cotton came in at a whopping 16 WPI which is considerably over the standard for worsted weight. It is supposed to be in the 9-12 WPI range. I then tried this pattern in DK (size 3) yarn instead and it had a better drape, but was noticeably smaller than the others I made.
So, in conclusion... I'm only recommending the Size 4, 24/7 Cotton by Lion Brand and if you choose to substitute with something else, I hope this information was helpful to you.
Another little note before we get to the good stuff...

Note: Yarn selection will make a huge difference in size and fit with this beanie pattern. 24/7 Cotton in worsted weight by Lion Brand is a thinner size 4 yarn that is 16 WPI, substitute accordingly.
Sizing guide:
Small/Medium is for 19-21" head circumference
Large/XL is for 22-24" head circumference
Notes:
Hook size may have to be adjusted depending on yarn/tension. Gauge check is at Rnd 4. If you are only ¼" off gauge, it shouldn’t affect the outcome too much.
See video below to get you started on the 1st & 2nd Rnds...
Always start with Color A and work in order; A, B, C.
The pattern is worked in a continuous spiral. We will not be joining at the end of a Rnd until we reach the brim/ribbing. I recommend using a SM in the first St with Color A at the beginning of each Rnd to help keep track.
Rnds 1-6 are the same for both sizes.
Rnd 1
Into MR with Color A;
SC, HDC, DC, EDC and pull loop loose,
Repeat from * to * with Colors B & C (12 Sts)
Rnd 2
*Pick up loop;
2 DC into next 4 Sts & pull loop loose, *

Gauge Check at the end of this Round. Measure from the last St of Color A
directly across the center to the middle St of Color C (See Photo right, pink line indicates where to measure). Should be approximately

Note: If you want a looser brim, size up to a 5mm hook at this point. Also, you can choose to continue the brim with a DC instead of HDC from here forward to make it looser as well.

Rnd 3
